LC/MS/MS: Determination of Nitrosamines in Tobacco Products

Introduction

Tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNA) are a group of chemicals found in tobacco, smokeless tobacco, and tobacco smoke. They are widely considered to be among the most important arcinogens in tobacco products and cigarette smoke. Tobacco product manufacturers must report their contents in tobacco products according to FDA’s guidance for tobacco industrial reporting. Due to the health concerns and the recent progress made in reducing the TSNA content in tobacco products, it is imperative to develop a fast, sensitive, selective, and robust analytical method that can determine low levels of TSNA in tobacco, smokeless tobacco, and tobacco smoke.

In this study, we further validated the method using a PerkinElmer QSight® LC/MS/MS System and extended the determination of TSNA to a wider range of tobacco products including cigarette tobacco, cigar tobacco and smokeless tobacco samples.
